IHIN Celebrates Its Partnership with Spencer Hospital, Spencer, Iowa

Spencer Hospital, a Top 100 Rural and Community Hospital, has been in partnership with the Iowa Health Information Network (IHIN) since 2013. Located in Spencer, Iowa, Spencer Hospital is a 99-bed facility that is complemented by three family practice clinics, two dialysis centers, the Abben Cancer Center, an inpatient behavioral health unit and a multi-specialty surgery center. The hospital has collaborated with the IHIN to contribute to data sharing for admission, discharge and transfer (ADT) messages, observation results (ORUs) for laboratory and imaging by providing structured patient-oriented clinical data between systems (e.g., laboratory results from the hospital to a physician's office), and registry reporting to aid in meeting state public health and meaningful use reporting requirements.

With the support from the hospital administration and the IT department, Spencer Hospital most recently served as a beta testing site for the Iowa Newborn Screening Information System (INSIS) integration between the IHIN, OZ Systems and the IDPH. This work has made it possible to simplify the reporting of INSIS registry information from hospitals who are submitting ADT information to the IHIN.  The IHIN will provide the message review and transport, eliminating the need for an additional interface to the INSIS.

The first delivery of NANI messages occurred on September 5, 2018.  The improvements in automation of newborn screening data and the decreased manual entry of required registry data entry has increased staff satisfaction as well.  “We appreciate the dedication of the development team at the IHIN to help us find solutions which work with our system and the opportunity to continue to develop methods for information sharing which benefit our patients and the Iowa medical community,” commented IT director Ed Meyer.

In addition to its successful participation as the pioneer testing site for the NANI integration through the IHIN, Spencer Hospital has also agreed to serve as the partner for testing the initial electronic case reporting (eICR) and EMS/Trauma registry integration work with IHIN beginning in October 2018. IHIN CEO Stephen Stewart, expresses gratitude for the relationship with Spencer, “The collaboration between Spencer and IHIN, combined with the latest technology we have been able to build and acquire, allows us to further enable the highest quality of care for Iowa’s healthcare consumers. The teamwork is truly something we are so proud to be a part of. We extend our sincerest gratitude to Spencer Hospital, and look forward to continued success!”
